BIOMASS – TIMBER HARVESTING & PROCESSING

A goal of this workshop is to support awareness of emerging technologies in the forest industry. Issues  being covered will include a biomass overview, harvesting guidelines, biomass crop assistance program, and equipment funding. An outdoor session will be held in the afternoon, so dress accordingly. Workshops organized by Don Peterson of Renewable Resource Solutions.

BMPs – BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES FOR WATER QUALITY (Day 1 of core curriculum)

Covers planning, timber harvesting, forest road design and location, wetland and stream crossing, riparian management zones, and permitting. Part of this session will be held outdoors. Jim Olive & Carmen Wagner with the DNR out of Madison will conduct these classes.

BMPs FOR INVASIVE SPECIES – KNOW ‘EM & SLOW ‘EM! (Day 2 of core curriculum)

Non-native invasive species, such as Buckthorn, Garlic Mustard and exotic Honeysuckle, pose a profound threat to forest ecosystems and forest productivity. This indoor/outdoor workshop will enable loggers and resource managers to identify the most troublesome invasive species and to understand the important role they can play in slowing the spread of these invaders. Wisconsin’s Forestry BMPs for Invasive Species will serve as our field manual as we consider specific forestry practices that will help reduce the impact of invasive species. Instructors: Gigi LaBudde, Community Forestry Resource Center & Tom Boos, WDNR.

BUCKING FOR GRADE

Topics include: need and purpose for proper bucking, principles of log scaling and grading, veneer and other specialty  products, and how to cut for grade to increase profits. The afternoon will include opportunity for you to put your knowledge to the test. Instructor: Jim Dougovito of Superior Forestry, LTD.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Topics include: determining your cost/cord to put wood roadside, calculations on whether or not to purchase equipment, IRS compliance, forms of business ownership, and business startup information. It will be taught by John Resech, Business Tax Services LLC. John has been in business for 35 years; over 80% of his clients are in the forest products industry.

CHAIN SAW SAFETY

Open to loggers only. Covers topics such as: personal protective equipment (PPE), proper body mechanics, OSHA  regulations, chainsaw maintenance, and tools to aid with safe tree felling. Each participant will demonstrate safe tree felling,  limbing, bucking and topping. Please bring your chain saw and PPE. Lunch is not provided for this workshop. FISTA strongly suggests having new employees go through this training. FISTA trainers will be available to conduct these trainings on a more personalized basis if necessary. COMPUTER BASICS

This course covers basic computer operations from turning on a computer to creating and saving files. Topics include:  omputer terminology, sending and receiving email, and introduction to software including word processing, spreadsheets,  and databases. CROSS TRAINING FOR LOGGERS & FORESTERS

This workshop will focus on how each group views the following: a timber sale, the need to understand each other’s point of  iew in the process, the costs associated with a logging job, and silvicultural prescriptions, and their purpose. Methods to  bring both groups to an advantageous outcome will be discussed. Barb Henderson will lead this session.

D.O.T. COMPLIANCE FROM A – Z

Gene Olesen, Safety Compliance Associates, will cover topics such as: hours of service, drug and alcohol testing, driver  ualification files, and time sheet and log book requirements. A DOT officer will also be present to update drivers on current  DOT regulations.

DRIVER’S VIEWPOINT

This program for truck drivers will cover engine warranty & maintenance and defensive driving & safety. It will be lead by  Harry Newman of V&H and a DOT officer will be present to discuss current DOT regulations.

FOREST ECOLOGY

This class will strengthen your understanding of forest resource conservation. We will consider the intricate weave of  organisms, soil, climate and other biological and environmental ingredients that make up the forest community, and how these delicate yet robust relationships affect tree growth, longevity and regeneration. From the classroom to hands-on activities  utdoors, we will explore interactions within the forest community that impact forest health, tree vigor and our management  ecisions. FUELS, OILS & GREASE

This program will cover topics such as: Hydraulic oil, ISO cleanliness, the Tier 4 diesel engines and grease. Presenters will be from Chevron and EH Wolf/Tilot Oil.

GPS

Jeff Dodge (MATC) will teach this beginners’ course introducing the NAVSTAR Satellite system and how a handheld GPS unit works with that system. Other topics include: latitude/longitude, heading, bearing, distance, and GPS setup parameters  including location coordinates, map datum, measurement units, waypoint entry, tracks and WAAS. Some GPS units will be provided. If you wish to use your unit, please bring your owner’s manual and computer cable, if provided. Some of this class will be conducted outdoors.

HARDWOOD MANAGEMENT

Jim Dougovito, Superior Forestry, will teach this class that will include an overview of silvicultural principals, basal area and methods of determining and harvesting hardwood stands with consideration of sites that have unique qualities. The afternoon field exercise will include demonstrations of basal area principals, along with hardwood marking / removal principals to include pulp and saw timber.

Workshop will contain basic chipper and grinder operation and maintenance information as well as harvester and forwarder operation and maintenance.

This workshop will have two main components: 1) Harvester Bar & Chain Maintenance Clinic – includes how to properly repair and sharpen saw chain, how to maintain saw bars and helpful hints for longer bar and chain life. 2) Hydraulic Hose & Fitting School – includes how to identify the proper hose & fitting, how to properly assemble a hose, proper hose cleaning, proper hose guarding and routing and a look at some of the new products in the hydraulic hose and fitting industry.

ONLINE MAPPING AND AERIAL PHOTO

Jeff Dodge will show you how to find and utilize free or low cost web-based resources and software for aerial photos, mapping and basic GIS applications at the county and state level. This introductory workshop may be particularly useful for timber sale layout, harvest planning and road layout and transaction documentation. No prior GIS or mapping experience is necessary.  Attendees should have a basic knowledge level on computer use and basic GPS use. Notebook computers, GPS units, and wireless internet will be provided or you may wish to bring your own equipment (some software downloads and installation may be required). Space is limited.

ROAD BUILDING

The goal of this program is to bring together several individuals from different groups that are concerned with the condition  and maintenance of our roads. The main topic being discussed is how the entrance/exit of a logging road can be constructed to cause the least amount of disturbance to the existing road(s). Representatives from County and/or Township boards will be in attendance.

PESTICIDE APPLICATOR PREPARATION

Forestry Outreach Specialist, John Duplissis, of UWSP will be conducting this workshop to help individuals better understand pesticide application. This is strongly recommended for individuals who will be taking the Pesticide Applicator Exam either at the April 8th Training Session in Weston (see below) or directly with the WI Dept. of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Purchase of Training Materials (book) is required before attending this workshop ($45 fee). You can obtain the  card needed to order the training materials several ways: 1) Contact the FISTA office, 2) Go online to http://ipcm.wisc.edu/PAT (click on “Downloads”), or 3) Contact your local Extension office. Each way will take time, so be sure to register early! If you register for and attend this workshop through FISTA, you will obtain your SFI credit for the year and, if up-do-date on your SFI training, will not need to register for SFI credit if you also attend the “Pesticide Applicator Training and Exam” workshop on April 8th in Weston.

PESTICIDE APPLICATOR TRAINING AND EXAM

This training is designed for initial certification with speakers Roger Flashinski (WI DATCP), Kyoko Scanlon (DNR Plant, Pest, and Disease Specialist), and John Duplissis (UWSP Forestry Outreach Specialist). The session will begin at 8:00am and conclude about 2:00pm with the certification exam immediately to follow. Preregistration with the Dept. of Agronomy is  required with $25 fee! Call Pesticide Applicator Training office at (608) 262-7588 or go online to http://ipcm.wisc.edu/PAT and click on “Register Online.” If you do not plan on attending the “Pesticide Applicator Preparation” workshop listed above, you will need to obtain the Training Materials at the time of registration for this training session. If you will be attending this workshop for SFI credit, you will also need to register through FISTA.

THE ECONOMY, THE TIMBER ECONOMY & FINANCING LOGGING OPERATIONS IN THIS ECONOMY/ STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATING

Must attend morning and afternoon sessions to receive SFI credit. The morning presentation will cover how to position your  business to be successful in these current economic conditions. In the afternoon you will learn to gain the competitive  advantage and improve effectiveness and adaptability when entering into negotiations. Class covers how to plan, open, explore, bargain and close a negotiation using effective business communication. (Instructors: Terry Marc/Michelle Madl)

TIMBER CRUISING

Jim Dougovito, Superior Forestry, will teach you basic cruising techniques and equipment to determine cords and/or MBF per acre. Standing tree grading will be discussed and demonstrated, as will considerations for sites with unique qualities. This workshop will be conducted in the classroom and in the field. Dress accordingly.

TIRE CARE, MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY

This workshop will cover OSHA regulations, proper mounting procedures, zipper rupture, proper tire repair and discussion on the causes of irregular wear. Good information for truck owners, drivers and truck maintenance personnel. Instructor: Larry Lampe, Pomp’s Tire.
